Home > Nursing at Arcada
At the
Arcada international campus in Helsinki, over 2,700
students and 170 employees work at the forefront of change and development. Arcada conducts
research relevant to society and provides lifelong learning in business and IT, energy and
materials technology, health and welfare, culture and media, and healthcare.
The TopUp programme offers internationally educated nurses the possibility of obtaining a
Finnish Bachelor of Health Care, 210 ECTS, in approximately one year. This is possible
through accreditation of former studies, practical training and work experience up to the
extent of 150 ECTS, leaving to study the remaining credits that have a specific focus on EU
and Finnish competencies.
The 1 year Top-up program is offered by Arcada UAS in cooperation with KayaWorld.
Courses are built on a multiform principle. Methods used in this format may include lectures
(online and in-house), individual reading assignments, workshops, case-based exercises,
simulations, web-based courses, real-life projects, and work practise.
The Arcada Patient Safety and Learning Centre (APSLC) provides an active simulation-based
environment where theory and practice are combined. Through simulation-based training
students learn to handle high-risk situations and special equipment, while at the same time
improving their Finnish language, critical thinking, leadership, and teamwork skills. A
broad spectrum of difficult crisis and accident situations can be recreated in this
simulation environment, which is safe and secure, easily adjustable and realistic.

The TopUp programme is taught in English, but please note that language skills in Finnish are necessary to complete work practice periods.
IELTS/TOEFL certificate is not mandatory, however as the program is in English and the nurses/students coming to Finland need to have a shared communicative language with staff and patients so we will be awarding extra points to those with IELTS/TOEFL certificates. Nurses with good spoken English will be preferred. Obtaining A2 Finnish level in India is a requirement for starting studies/working in Finland.
On completion of the course, students will receive a “Bachelor of Healthcare (Nursing)” on EU level and with that, they apply for rights to practice as a nurse in Finland from Valvira (www.valvira.fi/web/en), the national supervision authority for welfare and health, but before that they work as nurse students. Students will be paid a stipend ranging from € 1750 to € 2000 per month while they study for the work done by them. The students will need to complete an independent national language test (B1 level) before Valvira grants them professional rights. The bachelor’s degree awarded by Arcada will open doors to Europe, but most European countries have their own process of applying for professional rights which the candidate will have to take up.
